Tanzania Visa Requirements: A Guide for First-Time Travelers

If you're traveling to Tanzania for the first time, understanding the visa process is essential for a smooth trip. Here’s everything you need to know about obtaining a visa and entering Tanzania.

Visa Options

  1. Visa on Arrival:
    • Only available to citizens of one country.
    • Can involve long wait times at immigration and requires paying the fee in cash (USD).
  2. Tanzania eVisa:
    • Highly recommended for first-time travelers.
    • Apply online through the Tanzania eVisa Portal.
    • Provides a faster entry process, avoiding delays at immigration checkpoints.
  3. Embassy Visa:
    • For travelers not eligible for an eVisa.
    • Must be applied for in person at the nearest Tanzanian consulate.
    • Book an appointment in advance and specify the type of visa (tourist, business, work, study).

Note: Your visa will also cover Zanzibar, allowing seamless travel between the mainland and Zanzibar Islands.


Passport Requirements

  • Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date into Tanzania.
  • Blank Pages: Ensure you have at least one blank page in your passport for entry stamps.

Countries Exempt from Visa Requirements

  • Caribbean and Pacific Nations: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Vanuatu
  • African Nations: Botswana, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe
  • Other Countries: Brunei, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Kiribati, Macau, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Tonga

Diplomatic or official passport holders from Brazil, China, and Turkey are also exempt.


Documents Required for Tanzania Visa Application

If you need a visa, here are the essential documents for your application:

  1. A passport valid for at least six months beyond your return date.
  2. A completed visa application form.
  3. A bank statement proving financial stability for your trip.
  4. Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation, rental agreement, or an invitation letter).

  7. Valid health insurance covering your stay.

Visa Processing Time

  • The processing time for a Tanzania visa is typically 5-10 working days.
  • Delays may occur if information or documents are incomplete or incorrect.

Duration of Visa

  • The Tanzania eVisa (Tourist Visa) is valid for 30 to 90 days.
  • For stays longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit.
