Discover Rwanda: A Primate Lover's Dream Safari

Rwanda offers one of Africa's most captivating safari experiences, known especially for its world-class primate tracking. Against a backdrop of endless green hills and towering mountains, Rwanda’s landscapes are as awe-inspiring as the wildlife that inhabits them. Whether hiking through the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park in search of mountain gorillas or witnessing the playful behaviour of chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda promises a thrilling and life-changing adventure.

Imagine the unforgettable moment of spotting a gorilla family in their natural habitat—perhaps a silverback beating its chest or a mother carefully watching over her young. These intimate encounters are not only rare but are sure to leave a profound impact on any traveller.

What You Need to Know About a Rwanda Safari

1. The Primate Experience:

Rwanda is best known for its primates, especially the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, and for the chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest. Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as Rwanda is home to about one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. You’ll be guided by expert trackers, who lead you through misty forests to observe these gentle giants up close in their natural surroundings.

2. Expanding Wildlife Viewing Opportunities:

While Rwanda’s Akagera National Park may not yet rival the vast savannahs of Kenya or Tanzania, it’s rapidly gaining a reputation for exceptional game viewing. Akagera is home to the Big Five, including lions and elephants, and its savannahs are slowly becoming a must-see for any visitor. With each passing year, Akagera continues to improve, making it an increasingly rewarding stop on your Rwandan safari.

3. Cultural and Scenic Enrichment:

Beyond its wildlife, Rwanda offers a rich cultural experience, with opportunities to visit local communities, explore the history of the Rwandan people, and learn about the country’s journey toward conservation and unity after its tragic past. The country's beautiful landscapes—lush hills, vast tea plantations, and crystal-clear lakes—add a scenic element that enhances any safari.

When to Visit Rwanda

The best time for a Rwanda safari, particularly for gorilla trekking, is during the dry seasons:

  • June to September: This is the primary dry season and the best time for tracking gorillas and chimpanzees, as the terrain is less muddy, and the chances of rain disrupting your hike are low.
  • December to February: Another dry window, ideal for wildlife viewing and trekking.

If you're open to a little more rain and want to experience Rwanda’s dramatic landscapes in their greenest form, the wet seasons (March to May and October to November) also offer excellent gorilla trekking, but the paths can be slippery and challenging.

A Tailored Safari Experience

A Rwandan safari can be tailored to meet a wide range of interests. Whether you’re looking for primates, savannah wildlife, or an immersive cultural experience, Rwanda can provide it all in one trip. A 7 to 10-day itinerary can easily include gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe, and wildlife viewing in Akagera—all while keeping your travel costs reasonable.

Ready for a Rwandan Safari?

If you’re seeking a safari that goes beyond the traditional, a journey through Rwanda will exceed your expectations. With its dramatic scenery, rich biodiversity, and opportunities for life-changing wildlife encounters, Rwanda is the ideal destination for adventurous travelers ready to experience the magic of Africa.
