Experience Bwindi gorilla trekking in Uganda's UNESCO forest: intimate encounters with mountain gorillas

From face-to-face encounters with mountain gorillas in the mist of Bwindi to lion tracking across the vast savannahs of Queen Elizabeth โ Uganda rewards those who make the journey with experiences that exist nowhere else on earth.
Explore SafarisThere is a moment on every Uganda safari that stops you completely โ the one where you come face to face with a mountain gorilla. Not on a screen, not in a photograph. Crouched in the green half-light of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, close enough to hear the animal breathe, you understand instantly why Winston Churchill called this place the Pearl of Africa, and why people come back.
Uganda safaris offer something the continent’s more-visited circuits simply cannot replicate: extraordinary biodiversity layered into a landscape of improbable beauty. In a single journey, you can trek mountain gorillas through ancient rainforest, track chimpanzees through the fig-filled corridors of Kibale, cruise the Victoria Nile past the thundering curtain of Murchison Falls, and search for the prehistoric shoebill stork in the papyrus swamps of Mabamba. Uganda is where primates, big cats, great water and extraordinary birdlife converge in one remarkably compact country.
The national parks here are as varied as the wildlife within them โ from the jungle-draped slopes of the Albertine Rift to the semi-arid plains of Kidepo Valley, remote enough that you may share the landscape with almost no one else. Whether you are planning your first Africa safari or adding Uganda to a well-worn roster of East African adventures, this is a destination that gives back more than you expect. Enquire now to start planning your Uganda safari.
Uganda packs a staggering amount of biological diversity into a country roughly the size of the United Kingdom. Uganda safaris move through ecosystems that range from montane rainforest and papyrus wetlands to open savannah and the shores of Lake Victoria, and the wildlife changes with every landscape.
The mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are the headline, and they deserve to be. Uganda is home to nearly half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population โ roughly 460 individuals โ and a gorilla trekking permit grants you one extraordinary hour in their presence. But the country’s wildlife story extends far beyond the forest. Queen Elizabeth National Park harbours the famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector, vast elephant herds, hippo channels thick with activity, and over 600 bird species. Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile squeezes through a seven-metre gap in the rock, anchors Uganda’s most dramatic safari landscape, with healthy populations of lion, leopard, giraffe, and buffalo across the northern bank.
Kibale Forest National Park holds the highest density of primates on the continent and is the best place in Africa to track chimpanzees. Kidepo Valley in the remote northeast is a genuine wilderness, vast, stark, and almost entirely free of other visitors, with landscape and light that will stop you mid-breath.
And threading through all of it: birds. Uganda’s 1,060-plus recorded species make it one of the finest birding destinations on earth, from the otherworldly shoebill stork to the African green broadbill, the great blue turaco, and hundreds of Albertine Rift endemics that exist nowhere else.
A gorilla trek in Bwindi is unlike anything else in wildlife travel. Treks begin at first light, with groups of eight led by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and expert trackers into the forest. The walk can last anywhere from one hour to seven or eight, depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. When you arrive, you have one hour with them โ to watch, to photograph, to simply be present. The encounter is regulated precisely to protect the gorillas, and that intimacy makes it all the more powerful. The Rwenzori sector and Nkuringo offer alternative gorilla trekking experiences if you want something even more remote.
Uganda safaris are at their richest when they combine the country’s different ecosystems. A well-designed itinerary might open with the primates, gorillas in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale, before moving north to Murchison Falls for classic big-game game drives and a Nile River cruise, then looping through Queen Elizabeth for lions, elephants, and the famous hippo channel boat safari. This circuit covers Uganda’s finest safari experiences over 10 to 14 days and rarely feels rushed. For those with more time, Kidepo Valley adds a final, completely different chapter;ย remote enough to feel like a private wilderness.
Uganda’s accommodation landscape has matured considerably in recent years. Lodges in Bwindi range from intimate hillside camps perched above the forest canopy to private-use villas where gorilla tracking feels like a personal experience rather than a group activity. Murchison Falls hosts some of Uganda’s most atmospheric properties, riverside lodges where hippos graze on the lawn at dusk, and fish eagles call across the water at dawn. Queen Elizabeth’s lodges position you inside or adjacent to the park, some offering views across the Kazinga Channel, where elephants, buffalo, and water birds converge at the water’s edge.</p>
Uganda and Rwanda share the Virunga mountain range โ and with it, access to both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Combining a Uganda safari with gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park creates the Gorilla Grand Circuit: two countries, two entirely different gorilla trekking settings, and a journey that traverses some of the world’s most remarkable primate habitats. It pairs naturally with a beach finale on Zanzibar or a classic Kenya wildlife leg for those who want the full scope of East Africa in one trip.
A Uganda safari with Kwezi Safaris is put together by people who have been there โ who know which gorilla family offers the most accessible trek for first-timers, which lodge in Murchison positions you for the best lion sightings, and which chimp habituation experience in Kibale gives you the day rather than just the hour. That knowledge is built from years in the field, not from a brochure.
Our team handles every permit, every transfer, and every detail of the logistics so you arrive at the forest edge thinking only about what is ahead. Gorilla permits must be secured months in advance โ Uganda Wildlife Authority limits trekking groups to eight per gorilla family per day โ and we manage that process entirely, ensuring your permits align seamlessly with the rest of your itinerary.
What makes luxury Uganda safaris with Kwezi Safaris different is the personalisation underneath the planning. The guide who already knows your experience level before you meet. The camp that has your dietary preferences prepared without being asked. The morning starts an hour earlier because we know you want the light before anyone else is moving. Whether you come for the gorillas, for the Nile, for the birds, or simply because Uganda has been on your list for years, we build the safari around what matters to you. Contact us to start planning.
Uganda’s mountain gorillas exist today in part because of tourism. The revenue from gorilla permits โ currently $800 per person per trek โ funds ranger salaries, anti-poaching patrols, veterinary programmes, and community conservation initiatives that give local people a direct economic stake in the gorillas’ survival. When you book a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda, that permit is not just a ticket โ it is a conservation contribution that ripples outward into the forest for years.
The community-based tourism model runs deep in Uganda. Batwa Cultural Experiences near Bwindi connect visitors with the Batwa people โ formerly forest-dwelling hunter-gatherers who were displaced when the national park was gazetted โ and channel income directly to Batwa families. Village walks around Kibale and Queen Elizabeth bring you into the rhythm of daily life in communities that coexist with the wildlife on their doorstep, often in genuinely inspiring ways.
As a Travelife Certified operator, Kwezi Safaris selects lodges and experiences that meet credible sustainability standards โ not simply those that use the language. From eco-lodges that employ local guides and source locally to programmes that return a percentage of revenues to community projects, every choice in your Uganda itinerary is made with this in mind. The best Uganda safari is one where the country and its people are better for your having come.
Uganda safaris sit at a different price point to Kenya or Tanzania, primarily because of the gorilla permit fee. That cost โ $800 per person per trek for Bwindi โ is fixed by Uganda Wildlife Authority and applies regardless of operator. As a general guide, budget from $400โ$650 per person per day for a mid-range Uganda safari and $700โ$1,500+ per person per dayย for luxury, inclusive of accommodation, meals, game drives, guides, and park fees but exclusive of gorilla permits, international flights, and visas.
At $800, the gorilla permit is the most significant variable in a Uganda safari budget and the one that surprises first-time visitors most. It is non-refundable once issued and must be booked months in advance โ particularly for peak months from June through September and December through February. Chimpanzee trekking permits in Kibale are priced separately at $200. We manage permit acquisition as part of every itinerary we build, so availability is never left to chance.
Bwindi and Kibale in the southwest form Uganda’s most visited safari corridor โ polished, well-connected by domestic flights, and home to the country’s finest lodges. The north โ Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley โ is rawer, more remote, and generally more affordable at the accommodation end, though internal flights add cost. For experienced safari travellers who want the roads less driven, Kidepo in particular rewards the extra logistics handsomely.
All Kwezi Uganda safari packages include airport transfers, a private 4×4 safari vehicle or internal flights as required, a professional driver-guide, full-board accommodation, park entrance fees, and AMREF Flying Doctors emergency evacuation cover. Gorilla and chimpanzee permits, international flights, visas, tips, and personal purchases are excluded and quoted separately. Contact us for a tailored quote built around your dates and group size.
Uganda sits on the equator and experiences two dry seasons and two wet seasons annually. Unlike East Africa’s savannah destinations, gorilla trekking is possible year-round โ the forest does not shut down in the rains โ but the dry seasons are considerably more comfortable for walking and the tracks are easier to navigate.
This is Uganda’s most popular safari window. Trails through Bwindi and Kibale are drier and more manageable, and the gorillas tend to stay closer to the forest floor โ sometimes at elevation in the vegetation-rich upper zones where photographic conditions are exceptional. Murchison Falls is at its wildlife-viewing peak as animals concentrate around the Nile and its tributaries. Kidepo Valley’s grasslands thin to reveal otherwise hidden animal movement. Book permits and lodges early โ this is Uganda’s high season and gorilla permits in particular sell out months in advance.
The second dry window is shorter but excellent. Gorilla trekking conditions are good, Kibale’s chimpanzees are active around fruiting trees, and bird migration adds extraordinary species to an already rich avifauna. Many lodges offer shoulder-season rates, making this one of the best-value windows for a luxury Uganda safariย without compromising on experience.
Uganda’s two rainy periods bring lush, vivid landscape, fewer visitors, and significantly reduced accommodation rates. Gorilla trekking is harder โ the trails are slippery and the forest dense โ but the encounters, when they happen, feel even more intimate. Birding is spectacular, particularly for Albertine Rift endemics. Some remote roads become impassable in the heaviest rains. For experienced travellers who prioritise atmosphere and value, and who are physically prepared for wet conditions, the green seasons in Uganda can be genuinely compelling.
A minimum of eight days is recommended to do Uganda justice, allowing for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and at least one additional park, Kibale for chimps, or Queen Elizabeth for big game. Ten to fourteen days is the sweet spot for a BwindiโKibaleโMurchison FallsโQueen Elizabeth circuit. For the full sweep, including Kidepo Valley, allow sixteen days or more. Our itineraries range from focused gorilla trekking trips of five or six days to comprehensive twenty-plus-day Uganda and Rwanda or Uganda and Kenya combinations.
Gorilla treks vary considerably in difficulty โ from relatively short walks of one to two hours on flatter terrain to full-day expeditions up steep, muddy forest slopes. Uganda Wildlife Authority assigns families to groups based on fitness levels declared at the briefing, but no assignment is guaranteed. A reasonable level of fitness is advisable โ you should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven ground at altitude. Porters are available at the trailhead for a small fee and are strongly recommended. They carry packs, assist on steep sections, and provide real support on demanding days.
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda, available online via the Uganda e-visa portal. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory and must be evidenced on arrival โ without a valid yellow fever certificate, entry can be refused. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended throughout the country. Additional vaccinations, including typhoid and hepatitis A, are advisable. Consult your travel health clinic at least six weeks before departure.
Uganda is one of East Africa’s more stable destinations for international tourism, with a strong infrastructure around its main safari circuits. The national parks are professionally managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority, and the visitor experience is well-organised. As with all international travel, standard precautions apply. The remote north near the South Sudan border warrants closer monitoring, but the main safari corridor โ Bwindi, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls โ has an excellent safety record. Kwezi Safaris clients travel with AMREF Flying Doctors emergency evacuation cover included in every package.
Absolutely โ and the combination is outstanding. Both countries offer gorilla trekking, but the settings and gorilla families are different, and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park adds golden monkey tracking in the Virungas. The two countries share a border and can be linked seamlessly by road or a short domestic flight. Our Rwanda safariย team handles both sides. Many travellers extend a Uganda-Rwanda trip with a classic Kenya or Tanzania leg for the full East Africa sweep.
Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers in neutral or dark colours protect against nettles, insects, and the cold of higher forest elevations. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are essential โ the terrain is steep, and the ground is rarely dry. Gardening gloves protect hands when grabbing vegetation for support. A good quality rain jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera with a fast lens round out the kit. Leave bright colours, perfume, and anything that rustles in the vehicle. Most lodges near the major parks offer laundry facilities.
Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential. While Kwezi Safaris includes AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover in all packages, this covers emergency evacuation only and does not replace a full travel policy. Ensure your insurance covers trip cancellation, medical expenses, and evacuation from remote areas as a minimum โ given the relative remoteness of Uganda’s national parks, this is not optional. Gorilla permits are non-refundable, so cancellation cover that includes permit costs is worth confirming with your insurer.
From the mist-wrapped ridges of Bwindi to the vast plains of Kidepo Valley, Uganda's parks are among East Africa's most biodiverse โ and least crowded.

Uganda is not a destination you put together from a desk. Our team has walked Bwindi’s trails, tracked chimps through Kibale at dawn, and cruised the Kazinga Channel enough times to know exactly which variables make the difference between a good Uganda safari and an unforgettable one. That knowledge shapes every recommendation we make โ from which gorilla family suits first-timers to which lodge positions you best for Kidepo’s extraordinary light.
Uganda rarely works in isolation. Our most requested Uganda itineraries pair gorilla trekking with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, with the great savannah of Kenya’s Masai Mara, or with Tanzania’s Serengeti. We operate across all four countries and design cross-border trips as single, seamless experiences โ one team, one itinerary, zero gaps between the moving parts.
The person who has dreamed of a gorilla encounter since childhood needs something different from the serious birder chasing Albertine Rift endemics, and both of them need something different from the family whose children are old enough for their first Africa trip. Uganda is versatile enough to work for all of them โ if the itinerary is built correctly.
We design Uganda safaris around what you are actually after. Couples celebrating something significant get intimate lodges, private trekking experiences, and the kind of unhurried pace that lets the country reveal itself on its own terms. Wildlife photographers get the early starts, the patient guides, and the positioning that turns a gorilla encounter into a body of work. Families get age-appropriate activities, child-friendly camps, and guides who know how to make a chimp trek feel like an adventure rather than a briefing. And for the traveller who has been on many safaris and wants something genuinely different, Kidepo Valley, remote and raw, almost always delivers.
At Kwezi Safaris, a Uganda itinerary is built from the kind of experience that only comes from having been there repeatedly, having learned from every trip, and having a network of guides and lodge contacts that no booking platform can replicate. When we say we will secure your gorilla permits, we mean it. When we say we know which camp on the edge of Murchison gives you the best lion sightings at dawn, that knowledge is earned.
The gorilla will not wait. The forest has its own rhythm, the permits have their limits, and the lodges that make a Uganda safari exceptional fill early. The right time to start planning is now.
