Uganda sits on the equator and experiences two dry seasons and two wet seasons annually. Unlike East Africa’s savannah destinations, gorilla trekking is possible year-round — the forest does not shut down in the rains — but the dry seasons are considerably more comfortable for walking and the tracks are easier to navigate.
This is Uganda’s most popular safari window. Trails through Bwindi and Kibale are drier and more manageable, and the gorillas tend to stay closer to the forest floor — sometimes at elevation in the vegetation-rich upper zones where photographic conditions are exceptional. Murchison Falls is at its wildlife-viewing peak as animals concentrate around the Nile and its tributaries. Kidepo Valley’s grasslands thin to reveal otherwise hidden animal movement. Book permits and lodges early — this is Uganda’s high season and gorilla permits in particular sell out months in advance.
The second dry window is shorter but excellent. Gorilla trekking conditions are good, Kibale’s chimpanzees are active around fruiting trees, and bird migration adds extraordinary species to an already rich avifauna. Many lodges offer shoulder-season rates, making this one of the best-value windows for a luxury Uganda safari without compromising on experience.
Uganda’s two rainy periods bring lush, vivid landscape, fewer visitors, and significantly reduced accommodation rates. Gorilla trekking is harder — the trails are slippery and the forest dense — but the encounters, when they happen, feel even more intimate. Birding is spectacular, particularly for Albertine Rift endemics. Some remote roads become impassable in the heaviest rains. For experienced travellers who prioritise atmosphere and value, and who are physically prepared for wet conditions, the green seasons in Uganda can be genuinely compelling.
A minimum of eight days is recommended to do Uganda justice, allowing for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and at least one additional park, Kibale for chimps, or Queen Elizabeth for big game. Ten to fourteen days is the sweet spot for a Bwindi–Kibale–Murchison Falls–Queen Elizabeth circuit. For the full sweep, including Kidepo Valley, allow sixteen days or more. Gorilla treks vary considerably in difficulty — from relatively short walks of one to two hours on flatter terrain to full-day expeditions up steep, muddy forest slopes. Uganda Wildlife Authority assigns families to groups based on fitness levels declared at the briefing, but no assignment is guaranteed. A reasonable level of fitness is advisable — you should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven ground at altitude. Porters are available at the trailhead for a small fee and are strongly recommended. They carry packs, assist on steep sections, and provide real support on demanding days.
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda, available online via the Uganda e-visa portal. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory and must be evidenced on arrival — without a valid yellow fever certificate, entry can be refused. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended throughout the country. Additional vaccinations, including typhoid and hepatitis A, are advisable. Consult your travel health clinic at least six weeks before departure.

Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers in neutral or dark colours protect against nettles, insects, and the cold of higher forest elevations. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are essential — the terrain is steep, and the ground is rarely dry. Gardening gloves protect hands when grabbing vegetation for support. A good quality rain jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera with a fast lens round out the kit. Leave bright colours, perfume, and anything that rustles in the vehicle. Most lodges near the major parks offer laundry facilities.
Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential.
