Kenya’s private conservancies, bordering the Maasai Mara, spread across Laikipia, and further north around Samburu, hold the country’s most exclusive lodges: properties with a low guest-to-staff ratio, private plunge pools, and a dedicated vehicle and guide for the length of the stay. Many arrange night drives and walking safaris the adjacent national parks and reserves don’t permit, along with sunrise balloon flights and bush dinners set up specifically for your group.
These conservancy camps sit at a genuinely different price point from a standard tented lodge inside a national park, and the gap reflects real differences: land exclusivity, activity range, and staff ratio, not just décor.
Diani Beach, Watamu and Malindi hold Kenya’s strongest concentration of coastal resorts, from boutique beachfront villas to larger all-inclusive properties, all set against the Indian Ocean’s turquoise water. Pairing a safari with several days on the coast remains one of the most common ways to structure a longer Kenya trip: active mornings tracking wildlife, then a stretch of days with nothing scheduled.
Mombasa’s own beaches, Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu, offer a shorter transfer from the airport and a stronger cultural anchor in the city’s Old Town, a genuine alternative to the more remote south coast.
Not every strong safari stay comes with a four-figure nightly rate. Mid-range lodges and tented camps set just outside several of Kenya’s national parks and reserves offer comfortable rooms and genuine proximity to wildlife at a fraction of a conservancy camp’s cost. The trade-off is usually scale and activity range, not the quality of the game viewing itself.
